Stein WTF?

Ignore the wet spot on my shoulder; that's just my brain leaking out my ear. Starting work after a month of unemployment spent playing video games is kind of difficult. (I was playing Psychonauts if you were wondering.) It's mostly information dump right now, so I'll be glad when that is done and I can start actually learning the job.

After training I go to a later shift which is pretty awesome. I'd really love to take the 3 to midnight shift but then I'd probably never see Josh so that would kind of suck.

I start getting paid soon, which is awesome, because I need a car. T__T Being 25 and getting a ride to work from your mom is not great. Especially when your mom is not the world's best driver.

I finished a sweater, after I get the button on it I'll post a picture. Working on the bacon socks still.

Picture of the week: the carcass of the Camry.

Got a job!

knitting spock
Woooo. I was actually offered two jobs, so I am one lucky lady. I chose the job that paid less (though still the same as what I made at Embarq). The job I turned down was where Josh works, and he hates his job with the fire of a thousand suns. It's a tech support job - not ideal, but better than the alternative. I'd lose my weekends off, but my days off would be together. I would also have to work on most major holidays, which blows... but at the same time, you're paid REALLY well for it. Overall, I feel this job is the right choice for now.

It's my favorite kind of morning. Chilly but not cold, rainy... plus the leaves are turning, so that's nice. Sadly they're also falling really fast because of all this rain.

Off to the knitting store! Almost done with Josh's first sock. It's slow going. It will be a looooong time before I knit socks again on size zero needles. They're like toothpicks. I've started the second front pattern of the sweater I'm working on. I really like the pattern.

Have a great weekend, everyone! <3

I am really sorry...

plate of woe
...because it seems like every time I update it is me whining about something else. :looks apologetic: I normally have a paper journal for emo-ness, but I keep leaving it at home instead of bringing it like I normally do. Feel free to ignore me, lol.

The car.
It's fucked.

Engine is blown, and it would cost about twice what my car is worth to even fix it. I still can't get in touch with my dad, so I'm probably going to have to pay the tow service again to haul it back to my house. Hoping to get enough out of the tires (bought maybe 2 months ago) and useable parts for a down payment on a used car, though my pending unemployment isn't exactly going to help that. Josh and my mom both said they'd help me, so that is good I guess.

I know they say that "god never puts more on your plate than you can handle", and I'm handling it... but I'd really like some gravy soon.

At least I don't have to worry about how I'm going to get to work next week. Count your blessings, right? Even though life is kind of full of suck and fail right now, I'm a lot better off than some.

plate of woe
Was on the way home, noticed the car was having some issues accelerating. Thought "Eh, I'll take it to the mechanic tomorrow, no big deal."
Almost there, and it starts making this horrendous knocking sound when I accelerate. It scares the crap out of me, but I manage to get home.

I am slowing down in the driveway, and the engine just kind of peters out. I can keep it going only if I've got my foot on the gas, and it's still making the noise.

I can't get ahold of my mechanic, a.k.a my dad. It's not even normal he's-forgotten-the-phone crap either; I get a message that says "Directory Assistance is currently unavailable".

To top it off, I have a job interview with an inventory service on Wednesday, and you have to have your own car to get around to the various locations.

WTF, life. WTF.

So, yeah. My last day at Wackenhut (wackenhut wackenhut wackenhut what a fun name) is next Friday. I had an interview, and I did well... but so did probably half of the 50something people she interviewed, so I didn't get the job. Not too fussed about it - it was a cool idea but the schedule would have annoyed me after awhile. Pending unemployment is uncomfortable, but unemployment payments last 6 months now and if I can't find a job in 6 months either the system or me is pretty broken lol. Keep telling myself it'll be ok. :D

I haven't really started any new anime or manga that I've liked. I tried to watch the Nana anime, but I just couldn't get in to it like I did the manga. I have abandoned that in favor of Pandora Hearts, but I'm only on episode 3. I got sucked in to watching Gordon Ramsay yell at people on Hell's Kitchen.

I'm also going to try and tackle watching all of Stargate SG-1 woohoo.

I don't have much else to say, other than I hope you are all doing well :cheers for you:

This was kind of fun; a list of 25 random things about yourself (the rest are below a cut I can't get to work properly lol).

1. I used to play in a handbell choir; I played the B and middle C bells.
2. On a school trip, I went to the first inauguration of George Bush (Jr).
3. My first trip to Disney World was for my 22nd birthday and I squealed like a little girl when I saw Cinderella's castle.
4. In high school I was in the theatre group, and my prose piece (The Mirror of Erised chapter, edited, from the 1st Harry Potter book) got first place in state qualifiers.
5. I couldn't go to the actual state competition, though, because I had signed up for early college registration.

Bumping the date on this so it stays up top, hopefully I'll remember to update this! My goal: read 100 books this year. Manga does not count, though rereads do.

1. The Elegance of the Hedgehog / Muriel Barbery
2. The Hobbit / J.R.R. Tolkien
3. The Fellowship of the Ring / Tolkien
4. The Two Towers / Tolkien
5. The Return of the King / Tolkien
6. The Book of Lost Tales I / Tolkien
7. Stardust / Neil Gaiman
8. The Princess Bride / William Goldman
9. When the Gods Are Silent / Jane Lindskold (Not a bad fantasy novel, though somewhat diminished by the fact that the author manages to use "plunging neckline" twice in the same paragraph.)
10. The Reader / Bernard Schlink
11. xxxHolic: AnotherHolic / NISIOISIN
12. The Help / Kathryn Stockett
13. Five Quarters of the Orange / Joanne Harris
14. Selected Poems / ee cummings (Sometimes I really like good ol' ee, but sometimes I am like THIS IS RUBBISH)
15. Chocolat / Joanne Harris
16. The Areas of my Expertise / John Hodgman
17. Inkheart / Cornelia Funke
18. The Book Thief / Markus Zusak (best book I've read this year so far)
19. Mirror, Mirror / Gregory Maguire
20. The Eyes of the Dragon / Steven King (I am really not a King fan, but his fantasy is pretty decent)
21. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban / J.K. Rowling
22. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire / J.K. Rowling
23. Gods Behaving Badly / Marie Phillips
24. Child of a Dead God / Barb & J.C. Hendee (The Noble Dead series is pretty good! Not brilliant or anything, but some good solid fantasy)
25. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix / J.K. Rowling
25. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince / J.K. Rowling
26. Night Watch / Sergei Lukyanenko
27. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows / J.K. Rowling
28. Company of Liars / Karen Maitland
29. Circle of Magic: Daja's Book / Tamora Pierce
30. Circle of Magic: Briar's Book  / Tamora Pierce (Revisiting my adolesence lol, always loved Tamora Pierce)
31. Doppelganger / Marie Brennan
32. Warrior and Witch / Marie Brennan (I'm kind of disappointed there's not another book in this series. Seems like one more would've tied everything up nicely T__T)
33. Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal / Christopher Moore (I find it ironic that the 33rd book I selected for the year was this one - it wasn't intentional)
34. A Wizard of Earthsea / Ursula K. LeGuin
35. The Tombs of Atuan / Ursula K. LeGuin
36. Ghosts I Have Been / Richard Peck
37. The Once and Future King / T.H. White (This is technically four books, but these days they come all in one volume. I read it mainly for "The Sword in the Stone", and by the time I'm halfway through "The Queen of Air and Darkness" I'm ready for it to be over lol.)
38. The Great Divorce / C.S. Lewis
39. Daughter of the Forest / Juliet Marillier
40. Game of Thrones / George R.R. Martin
41. Son of the Shadows / Juliet Marillier
42. Child of the Prophecy / Juliet Marillier
43. Memoirs of a Geisha / Arthur Golden
44. The Privilege of the Sword / Ellen Kushner
45. The Odyssey / Homer (translation by Robert Fagles)
46. Out of the Silent Planet [Space Trilogy, Book 1) / C.S. Lewis
47. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society / Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows
48. The Lost Symbol / Dan Brown
49. Good Omens / Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (No matter how many times I read it, it's still great)
50. Bloodsucking Fiends (A Love Story) / Christopher Moore
51. A Dirty Job / Christopher Moore
52. A Wrinkle in Time / Madeline L'Engle
53. Dune / Frank Herbert
54. Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet / Jamie Ford
55. A Lion Among Men / Gregory Maguire (Meh. It seems like he's trying too hard to milk Wicked for all it's worth.)

Supahhhh friending meme!

I posted this to another site, but I figured I might as well share it here too.

Find me around the internet ^_^ )

In other exciting news, it is Josh's birthday! I am getting ready to wrap his present (I got him the second season of Bleach; he is an Orihime fanboy lol) and then I am going to start tearing through The Lost Symbol (sequel to The DaVinci Code, third in the series. I really hate the movie. Tom Hanks and his stupid hair - I don't like him as Robert Langdon.). I'm hoping it's good. None of Dan Brown's other books have quite measured up to The DaVinci Code, though Angels and Demons (the first book) was pretty good.

Did you hear that?

It was my job, turning into ash like a vampire in the sunlight. T___T

Laid off. October 16 is my last day. It'll be all right - there's usually work to do if you're willing to do it, but damn this sucks.

I finished your scarf! Picture - I had to use gold yarn for the fringe because I seriously underestimated how much yarn was needed for that, but I like it. I can change it to red if you want, but I will have to buy another ball of yarn for it and I'm not sure that I'd bother were I you. But it is your decision lol, if you want it red let me know. : )

It hangs down almost to my knees - I am 5'2" - I guess it's about four and a half feet long? Let me know if it's not long enough for you and I can add length on as well. I took a picture of me wearing it to give you an idea of length, but it was pretty horrible so I decided against it.

It has to finish drying, and I will de-lint it and remove any of my hairs I may have inadvertently knit into it (long hair, it happens T__T)... but barring any changes you want me to make (and please let me know if you want me to do any of the aforementioned things, really - I want it to be what you want lol) it is ready to be on its way. : )

omg fail
The power supply on Josh's computer crapped out. We're hoping that's the only thing wrong with it, but for now my computer is the only one in the house. It's going to be hard when my roommate comes back, because he gets this weird sense of entitlement about other people's shit. :annoyed:

We drove down to Knoxville yesterday to see University of Tennessee vs. Western Kentucky. First game of the season, we whooped them pretty soundly. I am not a great fan of football, but the atmosphere at the games are a lot of fun. Neyland Stadium is enormous: The 5th largest football stadium in the U.S., 9th in the world. I need a new camera because the one on my cell phone is meh, but:

This is part of the stadium. There's a tiny red section - that's the opposing team's section. The orange/white - 90k or so Tennessee fans. And they're really loud, lol.

I think I'm going to go play Fable 2 until it's time for game. Our Star Wars game is dying a slow death; I think next someone is wanting to run a Heroes Unlimited game but I don't know if I'll play. I did just get a new set of d20s, though, and they've been sadly underused... ^_^

My roommate leaves for DragonCon in Atlanta on Thursday. On one hand I'm kind of depressed that I couldn't go, but on the other I am really excited about several days without him lol.

Last weekend we drove down to my great-great aunt's house and picked up a cool antique woodbox. It's not in fantastic shape, but it'll hold kindling. This weekend or next we'll probably start chopping and bringing in wood for the winter.

It felt like fall yesterday and this morning, yay! I love the fall / winter season.

I am yarning:

(The picture is kind of crap since I'm at work and using my cell phone camera, but you get the idea. GRYFFINDOR!)

Happy Birthday!

Destination weddings really suck. Cool idea, but unless Daddy Warbucks is paying for everyone...

A couple friends are making plans to get hitched. They're getting a little tetchy because no one seems to want to commit to coming to a wedding / cruise.

Their argument: "It's cheaper than you think it would be, and we could have the wedding at the port so anyone who didn't want to do the cruise wouldn't have to!"

I love these two, really... but there are some things I just can't do.

Even without the cruise, we'd still have to fly (or make the looooong drive) to Florida and stay overnight. With the cruise, it could be upwards of $400 PER PERSON, and they've invited both my boyfriend and I. They aren't offering to help with travel expenses, though I think there is some kind of group rate for the cruise.

There's also the issue of having to time off work, which they don't seem to care about either.

Actually, they don't seem to care about anything other than the fact that people aren't clambering all over each other to sign up for this. I've tried to gently put my point across, but all I got was the aforementioned "It's cheaper than you think!" Maybe it is, but I've still got to pay my bills and "I went on a wedding cruise" is not really a good excuse for lateness.

Snape Inquisition
LJ is running really slowly today! Not sure if it's because of those DDoS attacks, or if my work internet is just being stupid again.

Hmm.

I wrote a post for [info]dogdaysofsummer , prompt 5 I think. I haven't posted it. I don't know that I will, but it's about a late-night fridge raid. I've never written any HP fic that wasn't Snape-centric, and this one seems kind of silly XD.

I have been kind of addicted to [info]adayinmylife  as of late. I think I may participate soon; if I do, I'll post it here. It's like a journal entry in pictures! I think that is really interesting, seeing the lives of people you've never met in person through the pictures they choose.

Reading Cavedweller. I keep meaning to pick up Bastard Out of Carolina by the same author (Dorothy Allison), but I forget when I'm at the bookstore. Later this week I'm trading a loaf of my bread for a friend's extra copy of the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. Looking forward to it; I do love a good fantasy epic and I've heard this is pretty good.

OH GOOD NEWS! I am going to be buying the house I grew up in from my dad! I am very excited. I've lived here most of my life, and I'm really hoping it all works out. I love this house. It's out in the country, but still pretty close to everything in town. It's out in Watauga. [Watauga's population - 403 at the last census in 2000 haha. I'm right on the edge of it and Johnson City, population 60k or so.] It needs some repairs, but overall it's in good shape. You can come and visit me if you're ever out in here in nowhereland lol. I have a spare bedroom and some cats to keep you company.

Josh's birthday is coming up. I think I'm going to knit him some bacon socks. Seriously, they make yarn dyed in bacon colors, and when you knit it up it looks like a nice piece of marbled bacon.

Stein WTF?

"She wants the wages of sin."
"Which are?"
"In this case, three shekels."

(Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal / Christopher Moore)

Lawdy, do I love me some Christopher Moore. Hilarious. I think the only book of his I didn't thoroughly enjoy was Island of the Sequined Love Nun.

Yesterday I did not do anything like work all day. I played Fable 2 and watched Dead Like Me - it was lovely. Alas, back to the grind this week. Schools are starting back... next week, I think? They get earlier and earlier every year, though maybe now I won't have to chase skateboarders away from the office daily.

I'm ready for the fall, and cooler weather. Cold always puts me in the mood to knit more. I've got about 9 more inches on the back of my Ariel shrug, which I am starting to get annoyed with. It's a nice pattern... but it's just complicated enough that I can't do anything else while I'm working on it and not complicated enough to stave off boredom. Plus, it's knit sideways so the back measures a whopping 33".

Um, I am kind of writing a... thing. I don't know what to call it right now. Maybe a short story? I'd call it the beginnings of a book but I don't know if I've got that much material in me, lol. I am rather enjoying myself, though.

You can look if you want. Just don't point and laugh T__T )
